I’ll bet you didn’t know next week is National Handwashing Awareness Week.
Really it is! I saw it right there on the of national health observances list for December, along with Safe Toys and Gifts Month, and World AIDS Day which was observed on the 1st of the month.
Now, on some level designating a week every year to build awareness around hand washing may strike you as strange, silly, or even bordering on the absurd. But there are serious reasons to encourage hand washing, it is after all cold and flu season and good hand hygiene can help prevent the spread of infectious disease.
In hospitals, we are keenly aware of the need to follow proper hand hygiene practices for everyone’s well being. At Jefferson we think it’s so important to Wash ‘Em that we made this video to encourage our staff and visitors to practice good hand washing.
As a father of young children who often balk at the simple request to wash their hands before dinner, or pretty much any other time I ask, I can tell you the video isn’t just for hospitals.
My kids love the Wash ‘Em video and when dad (that’s me) starts singing the tune, the compliance rate shoots up very nicely. Sure it’s because my tone-deaf rendition is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard to their cute little ears, but still, it’s effective!
So, during National Handwashing Awareness Week we want to help you and yours to remember to Wash ‘Em. It helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases and it saves lives!
At Jefferson University Hospitals safety is a top priority.
