September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, even though the spotlight shifts away in October, the importance of prostate health lasts all year long.
Throughout September Jefferson and The Philadelphia Eagles have emphasized the importance of prostate health including, but not limited to, cancer awareness.
While prostate cancer is a significant health concern for men, there are other issues that affect men’s health and the quality of their lives including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – or enlarged prostate to most of us.
Do you find yourself getting up multiple times a night to go to the bathroom? Do you experience urinary urgency? Do you have a weak stream? Do you feel like you haven’t completely emptied your bladder after urinating?
These are all potential signs of enlarged prostate.
If living with an enlarged prostate is diminishing you quality of life, Jefferson urologists offer a full complement of minimally-invasive treatments. Those treatments include medication; transurethral microwave thermotherapy – a procedure that uses microwaves to heat and destroy excess prostate tissue; and so-called interstitial laser treatment which uses a laser fiber to heat and destroy excess tissue.
These advanced procedures effectively treat BPH on an outpatient basis without the need for general anesthesia. Physicians here performed the first microwave prostate treatments in the region so you can rest-assured Jefferson’s treatment team has the experience and expertise needed for the use of leading-edge procedures.
