Special Efforts for Patient Earns Nurse a DAISY Award

Jefferson staff nurse Evan Boscaczyk, BSN, RN of the telemetry oncology unitJefferson staff nurse Evan Boscaczyk, BSN, RN of the telemetry oncology unit, 3 Center, acted to help a patient with end-stage leukemia be there for her children and earned a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

During a lengthy inpatient stay, Evan wanted to help the young mother of five children aged 3 to 16, be present for her kids, even as she underwent treatment. So, he arranged a surprise party for the patient.

The party took place in the unit conference room and Evan requested staff to bring in arts and crafts supplies so the mom was able to play with her kids. Evan coordinated the details of the party with the physicians, staff, and the patient’s husband and he funded much of the event on his own, along with the help of his coworkers.

Moreover, the party was held on Evan’s weekend off, and he left a family celebration of his own to coordinate and participate.

The party was a huge success. The patient and her family were thrilled.

Evan also coordinated the purchase of gifts for the children for this upcoming Christmas and made sure the patient would be able to wrap them.

“It was a huge success” reports nurse manager, Joann Silcox, “The patient spoke to me about how relieved she was to now have wrapped gifts for her children, and proudly showed me the art projects she completed with them”.

Thank you Evan for demonstrating the values of excellence in caring with this extraordinary effort to help a patient celebrate her family.

Congratulations Evan on winning a DAISY Award and thank you for demonstrating Jefferson values every day!

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses

J. Patrick Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient’s families. Jefferson is proud to bring the tradition of honoring extraordinary nurses here.

You can nominate your Jefferson nurse for a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses here or by going to www.JeffersonNursing.org.
