A recently study found that the spouses of people with diabetes were at an increased risk of developing the chronic condition.
Canadian researchers analyzed the results of 11 studies that tracked couples to better understand whether being married to someone with diabetes impacted the partner’s risk of getting the disease.
“Our pooled estimate suggests that a spousal history of diabetes is associated with a 26 percent diabetes risk increase,” the researchers concluded. “Recognizing shared risk between spouses may improve diabetes detection and motivate couples to increase collaborative efforts to optimize eating and physical activity habits.”
The study was published online in the journal BMC Medicine.
