To Help Others, Velour Had to Help Herself

Velour lost 210 pounds as well as her diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bad back and more.

Velour Sleeve GastrectomyA certified nursing assistant, Velour was constantly on her feet. Her focus was always on her patients, but her weight was interfering with her ability to help others and her lengthy list of health issues was growing.

Her legs were constantly cramping up. She had a bad back. She had high blood pressure. She had high cholesterol, sleep apnea and diabetes. Velour was finding it difficult to do the constant bending and lifting her job required and her patients needed.

When the 5-foot-6-inch-tall Philadelphia woman reached 405 pounds, Velour knew it was time to do something. She’d already tried all those commercial diets and even went on an all-liquid diet. So, she turned to the weight loss surgery specialists of Jefferson’s Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program.

“I knew it was time to help myself,” she explains.

Jefferson physicians and staff spent time with Velour to explain her surgical options. She liked that all the bariatric procedures at Jefferson are performed using minimally invasive and fully laparoscopic techniques.

That meant she would be able to get back on her feet and “back with my patients in no time,” she says. “The staff put me at ease right away.”

As a healthcare professional, Velour was pleased that at Jefferson she would have a team of experienced and dedicated healthcare professionals that includes board-certified surgeons, nurse practitioners, dieticians, psychologists and medical consultant physicians. And that everyone took the time to get to know her.
And she saw that the team has worked with more than 800 patients who’ve lost in excess of 23,000 pounds since the Program began in 2008. She also was reassured that Jefferson University Hospitals has been certified as an Accredited Center by  the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.

Velour chose to undergo a sleeve gastrectomy. Since her operation, Velour has lost 210 pounds. Her Jefferson team has stuck with her throughout her weight loss journey and helped keep her on track to reach her goals.

She did more than lose 210 pounds, too: She got rid of her diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and snoring, as well as her bad back and the constant cramping in her legs.

“I’m not carrying any of that around with me anymore,” she declares. “The surgery and the entire program helped so much.”
