Jefferson at the Philadelphia Science Festival

Thomas Jefferson University Campus and City of Philadelphia AerialThe Philadelphia Science Festival held Friday, April 25 through Saturday, May 3, 2014 is a collaborative effort featuring 175 of the region’s institutions, museums, and cultural centers working together feature the role of science and technology in our daily lives.

The Festival seeks to inspire future generations of scientists and engineers.

Thomas Jefferson University is among the Festival sponsors and will be participate in many activities during the 9-day Festival. Those include:

Friday, April 25 – Astronomy Night at Jefferson

6:30-7:30 pm – Hamilton Connelly Auditorium. NASA astronaut Terry Hart lifts-off event with a talk about his mission on the Space Shuttle.

7:30-10:30 pm – Lubert Plaza. Telescopes and amateur astronomers lead stargazing party.
Hamilton 1st Floor Lobby. Meteorite display and outer space related videos.

Friday, April 25 – Science Carnival after Dark Kick-Off Party at Franklin Institute

6:30-9:00 pm – Science shows & interactive demonstrations, all tailored to adults.

  • It’s Date Night at Jefferson’s booth. Meet Resuscitation Anne, the most kissed person in the world, kissed by over 300 million people. Learn about CPR, AED & First Aid training. Take a quiz about the health risks & benefits of kissing.

Saturday, April 26 – Discovery Day at Fox Chase Farm

12:00-4:00 pm – Mini-carnival in Northeast Philadelphia. Jefferson’s hands-on activities include:

  • What’s Growing on Your Hands? Bacteria and the importance of proper hand washing, demonstrated by Jefferson’s popular music video ‘Wash ‘Em, It Saves Lives.
  • What Do You & a Strawberry Have in Common? Extract DNA from a strawberry using common household ingredients.
  • What Does Smoking Do to Your Body? Demonstration of how our lungs work, activity showing the danger of second hand smoke, and smoking cessation tips and resources.

Tuesday, April 29 – Science Night at the Ballpark

Before & During Phillies game – 15 activity booths throughout the Citizens Bank Park concourse
7:05 pm game time

  • Is Your Head in the Game? Jefferson Comprehensive Concussion Center demonstrates what a concussion is and how it is caused. Fun game-like activities for families to learn about concussion testing.

Sunday, April 27 – Science Café

12:00-1:30 pm Frankford Hall Beer Garden, 1210 Frankford Avenue

  • Michael Oshinsky, PhD discusses the Science of Hangovers

Wednesday, April 30 – Science Café

6:30-8:30pm Franklin Institute, Fels Planetarium

  • Karl Doghramji, MD discusses the Science of Sleep

Saturday, May 3 – Science Carnival on the Parkway

10:00am-4:00pm  Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Over 150 exhibitors featuring hands-on science activities, science entertainment, and food vendors. Jefferson’s tents feature fun, hands-on activities including:
