Bernard found himself waking up gasping for breath. The problem got so bad the 30-year-old Philadelphia man was afraid to go to sleep and went the the Jefferson ER where a novel, multi-specialty collaboration identified the problem and began treatment.
Obstructive sleep apnea has been linked to a range of health problems including stroke and heart disease, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association links treatment of sleep apnea using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) with lower risk of developing high blood pressure.
